Back to Sewing

I'm back to sewing!  I do it all the time, but now-a-days I hardly sew any clothing, somehow it seemed to much effort, especially since I can get second-hand clothing easily and cheaply here at the Mitumba Market.  Fabric alone is much more expensive than buying a new (used) outfit for a child.

I have always admired the cute little reversible pinafore, and I decided that the Babe should at least have one.  I purchased the pattern for a pinafore top from AliyahsHopeChest on Etsy and started out with two fabrics from my stash.  As soon as I started, the power went off (again!), but no worries, it became cutting by candle light.  I had one more power outage while sewing the next day, but managed to put it together with this lovely result.

Next project will probably be a dress after I tweak this pattern a little.

Back on Track

It has been quiet here. . . school started two weeks ago and the in-laws were here for the last four weeks, but they left last night.  I should soon be back on track in the shop and on the blog.

I am still waiting to make some good photo's, but by the end of the week I hope to list these crowns in my shop!  I hand-dyed the felt a few weeks ago, and finally got a few moments to make crowns with it.  I am quite happy with the outcome, and am looking forward to making one of these for our little girl's birthday.  She was the inspiration beyond these.

Het is hier stil geweest. .

Old Fashioned Playing Time

My afternoon: As I am trying to work on some butterfly wings while the Babe is taking her nap, I hear the other children run around the house and the garden to play hide-and-seek.  Soon enough the game has moved to the shared garden within our compound and the neighbours kids that are also off from school join in.  Fast forward 90 minutes and the game is still in full swing!  I just love it when they just play like I used to as a child, and confirm to me that we don't need computer games, iPads and TVs to have a great time.

In the meantime, I manage to get some sewing done during the day in the school holidays. . . It's a win-win situation!

Here's a preview of the wings that soon will be available in the shop thanks to my kids old fashioned playing time!

A Finished Pillow

My daughter got a spurt of creative energy and finished her pillowcase and pillow!  She was happy to finally use the sewing machine, but admitted that it looks much easier than it is.

We are both very proud of the beautiful result!

Crafting On

As I mentioned before, the school holiday has started. I am trying to encourage the kids to craft a little more now that school is not in session, and my own level of crafting has been reduced.  The sessions require a lot of patience on my side, since I seem to be the more enthusiastic one.  However, we are slowly making progress in some projects: a recorder bag for my oldest son, and a pillow made by my oldest daughter.

My daughter and I have been helping my son with the knitting as we find it throughout the house and a couple of stitches here and there are very relaxing,

The crocheted piece was completed by my daughter at school, I suggested to make a pillow case out of it for her to enjoy her handwork daily in the future.  It's also a perfect project to learn to work on mom's sewing machine. . .  I'll then most likely need another load of patience needed, but I am looking forward to share their final results!

Repurposing to beat the Cold

The temperatures here in Nairobi have dropped over the last few days and it is unseasonably cold and wet here.  I know, we are spoiled when we call temperatures of 18C cold!

The kids are sniffing and coughing and enjoying their occasional hot ginger, lemon & honey tea.  Keeping them dressed warm is a task, also for the new Babe in our home.  The warm clothes that we have for her are limited.  While I am planning to knit her a nice wool top, I made a quick wool tunic for her today by re-purposing a felted wool jumper.  I am not totally happy with it yet and will make some adjustments (e.g. the length) The little lady liked her tunic and stayed warm and comfy while playing outside.

Dress Up Set

I just finished an special order for one of the parents at the Waldorf Kindergarten.  It was an initial request for a birthday crown, but after seeing some of my creations in the shop, it became a request for more.  It's now a dress up set for his son's third birthday.  A nice collection of items that certainly will assist in many happy hours of magical play: two crowns, two wands, a set of butterfly wings, a play cape and four reversible masks.

Most of it was created with the help of my little assistant sitting on my lap behind the machine. . . we are bonding!

. . wij bouwen een relatie op!

First Sewing for the Babe

It has been an interesting week here.  A new child in the house also means that new rhythms have to be established.  We are all still getting used to each other and to the need for a new rhythm.  My production for the shop has been put on hold as we are all trying to figure this out.  However, after the sudden addition (it was quite sudden to us since they had initially told us that there was a longer waiting period for a girl), we had to get into gear for the necessities for a toddler: a car seat and a travel cot were borrowed from friends until we have arranged for a long-term solution.  Clothes were bought at mitumba and then the bibs. . . a perfect excuse to get the sewing machine out!

I set out to quickly sew some bibs out of kikoy and jeans from my stash. . . it was fun to make these reversible bibs, especially with the little one 'helping' me.  I did not have a chance to photograph them before they were used, but managed to take a picture of two when they came fresh out of the laundry (pre-ironing!).

I really LOVE working with kikoy and jeans.  Would these be a good addition to my offerings in the shop?

Technicolour Dreamcoat

It's the season of the end-of-the-year-plays at the Nairobi Waldorf School.  As a mother with sewing skills a busy time of the year as well to work on new costumes.  Here's the first one that I completed this week being frugal and using scraps of 'China silk' that were left over from another set of costumes.  Daugther-dear will not be Joseph, but happy to model the coat with golden lining.

On to the next costume!

Reversible Rainbow Felt Crown

I finally managed to finish the other crown from the hand dyed rainbow felt I made.  It's a very simple design, since I am using the rainbow felt.  While I was taking pictures this morning, I realised that it is reversible as well.  Two crowns in one!  How's that for a weekend deal?

Have a lovely weekend!

Twee kronen in ƩƩn! Hoe is dat voor een weekend deal?

Prettig weekend!

The Result

I just wanted to share the result of yesterday's crown with you, and power went out again. . . I hope to list it in the next few days. . . granted that electricity is stable!

. . als we dus weer electriciteit hebben!

One of those days

Today is one of those days where I had planned to do a lot sewing.  Only to come back from the school run, start sewing, and then the electricity goes off.  It will be off for the rest of the day as the power company is improving its infrastructure.  Inconvenient for me to do it today, but something that is really necessary as well, as it will cause less 'spontaneous' outages during the rest of the week.

Well, it will allow me to ponder how to finish this rainbow crown.  It's the result out of my experiment in dyeing wool felt.

Accomplished

January flew by!  It's February and I was wondering if I had anything accomplished since we arrived back from our trip.  Getting back in the rhythm was a big task for the month. . . But I also got some custom orders done, some had been requested months ago.  I feel quite accomplished, especially sine January did not feel like a productive month.

Januari vloog voorbij!

Smart Phone Cover Tutorial

Here it finally is, the tutorial to make a quick smart phone cover.  A simple idea for a last minute gift!

All you really need is some pieces of wool felt and sewing thread.  I did mine with a sewing machine, but you can also handsew with a blanket stitch.  I used a cookiecutter shape to make an easy reverse applique star.  The double felt top gives some extra protection to the display.

First, trace your phone on a piece of paper, to create a pattern.  Add some millimeters to the sides to ensure that you will have a large enough pouch (for the thickness of the phone - 3 to 5mm should do)

Cut out the pattern and cut it three times out of the felt.

Pin two contrasting pieces of felt together and trace a shape in a magic fabric marker.  BTW - don't you love the warning text on this one?  I guess they did a lot of research to find many people holding the fabric with one hand, and marker in the other to then use your teeth to remove the cap ;-)

Then stitch the shape through the two layers of felt.  Follow the shape two times.

With a seem ripper, carefully remove the top layer of the shape, to show the contrasting colour felt.

Stich the two layers of felt together at the top.

Then pin the back side to the front and stitch the sides and the bottom.
Trim the outside seams to make them even, and you are ready!
A protective phone pouch that still gives you easy access to your phone.

. . zo niet, laat het me even weten dan kan ik alsnog vertalen.

New Dolly

I feel I have been in the "stick horses and butterfly wings" mode for a while now.  As a change of pace I decided to finally use some of the nicky velours that I bought months ago.  This cutie developed, and the kids LOVE her.  Although I feel it still needs a bit of tweaking on the body . . . siblings will probably follow soon!

It's nice to create something else for a change of pace.

Of Tails and Teeth - part 2

We can't wait any longer for the party on Saturday.  The little one had to wear his new Sabre-Toothed Tiger costume yesterday, way ahead of the party.

It was another re-purposing project as I made it from a women's tunic.  I was planning to make a one-piece costume, but then changed my mind and made pants and a top with a fitting pair of pants and a t-shirt as guidance.  The change was made due to the fact that I had to piece the fabric together, which you hardly notice with this print, and because he can now wear it longer.

The mask was also a creation on the go, the snout is a little to much wolf-like to me, but the little man is happy.  Here are the before and after pics:

Of Tails and Teeth. . .

Halloween is not traditionally celebrated in our culture, but American friends of ours are hosting a family Halloween party this weekend.  Of all the dress up items that we have, our kids could have selected a few costumes from there, but the little one had just one wish: a sabre tooth tiger. . . Not the first costume one would think of, no tiger-print fabric at the shops, but I found something close enough at a charity shop here.  So, I am up-cycling a women's top to a children's costume.  Here's the work in progress.  I hope to share the final result soon!

Fabric Destash

It has been a while since I bought a lovely grey-white toned fabric, together with a grey linen piece in the 'left overs' basket at Ikea with the plan to make a bag out of it.  The fabric disappeared in my stash for a long time, until this week.  It was not a bag that emerged, but a cover for our new keyboard.  It happened to be that I also made a sewing machine cover out of the same fabrics a few months back.  Both were made without a pattern, but with some measuring and a quick design on the go, simple but effective to keep the dust at bay.

I have no more fabric left over for a bag, but great covers aren't they?
