Easing into knitting again

I love wool, I can drool over the gorgeous colours and textures.  BUT, I have not knitted in a long time.  Until recently.  The cold in Nairobi got to me and I finally thought of a nice quick project to use some of the wool that I won, and to be warmer.  A simple cowl.  It was great to knit again as a diversion from the sewing, and here is the result.  I am now gathering up courage to start the lettuce slide scarf with the other two skeins.

Ik hou van wol, ik kan van de verschillende kleuren en structuren kwijlen (zeg je dat in het Nederlands?).  MAAR, ik heb all een hele tijd niet meer gebreid. Tot voor kort. De kou in Nairobi hield maar aan, en dacht eindelijk aan een snel project om een beetje warmer te zijn, en om de mooie wol te gebruiken die ik pasgeleden gewonnen had.  Een eenvoudige col. Het was heerlijk om weer eens te breien, langs al de naai projecten die ik de laatste tijd heb gedaan.  Zie hier het resultaat!  Ik ben nu al mijn moed aan het verzamelen om aan de 'Lettuce Slide Scarf' te beginnen met de andere twee strengen.

Snow Globes Gone Wrong?

One of my Pinterest Boards has long had a craft for the kids on it that I wanted to try: home made snow globes.  There are several options on how to make them, but I went with Marta Stewart's instructions.

The kids chose their little plastic animals in the morning and we glued them to the jar lid with E6000.  A few hours later, son number 1 and I continued to work on the globes, we poured in some glitter (in various colours I must add), the water and glycerine in the jar,  we stirred it all up,put on the lid and turned the jar over: most of the glitter was floating on the top. . .it was not really snowing.  Thinking that it was the glycerine that caused the glitter to stay afloat, we eliminated that from the jars of the other two kids, but we had the same result.  The kids were extremely happy with the snow globes that they created, but I have to admit that I was disappointed.


Until. . .we returned from a long weekend away.  The glitter finally settled and had almost all gone to the bottom of the jar.  Good to know that it might take a few days for the glitter to settle down.  Another lesson learned is that next time we will take bigger figures or elevate them in the lid, these sheep, dragons and dinosaurs are a little lost in my opinion.

Een van mijn Pinterest Prikborden heeft al heel lang een kinder knutselactiviteit die ik wilde proberen: een zelfgemaakte sneeuwbol.  Er zijn verschillende tutorials, maar ik heb die van Marta Stewart gebruikt.

De kinderen kozen hun eigen plastic dieren in de morgen en we lijmden die in de deksel met E6000 lijm.  Een paar uurtjes later werkten zoon nummer 1 en ik verder aan de sneeuwbollen.  We deden glitter (in verschillende kleuren), water en glycerine in het glas, we mengden alles goed, deden de deksel op het glas en draaiden het om: heel veel glitter bleef bovenop het water drijven. . . het sneeuwde niet echt.  Omdat ik dacht dat de glycerine de oorzaak was dat de drijvende glitter, deden we geen glycerine in de glazen van de andere twee, maar met hetzelfde resultaat.  De kinderen waren dolgelukkig met de sneeuwbollen die we maakten, maar ik moet toegeven dat ik teleurgesteld was met het resultaat.

Totdat. . . we na een weekendje weg thuiskwamen.  De glitter was bijna allemaal op de bodem van het glas, en als we schudden, dan sneeuwde het!  Het duurt dus een paar dagen voordat de glitter doet wat ervan verwacht wordt. Een andere les die we geleerd hebben is dat we de volgende keer grotere figuurtjes moeten nemen, of ze op een verhoging zetten, want onze schaapjes, draken en dinosaurussen gaan erg verloren in onze sneeuwballen.

A family trip to the equator

With the in-laws visiting from abroad, we have been going on some extra trips this month.  This weekend we packed up the family and drove towards the equator.  Not a long trip since it is located about a good two and a half hour drive North of Nairobi.

Somehow the drive up North is easier and the windy roads toward Mount Kenya are rather decent.  We left Nairobi on the super highway that brings one to Thika, also known as pineapple country to our kids, as one sees large fields with pineapple plants along the road along with large green/red signs and yellow lettering of the company who owns the pineapples.  As a matter of fact, you might easily find them back on your supermarket shelves in a can!

We found a lovely place to stay on a trout farm, in the so-called 'Creaky Cottage', a little rustic house build around a tree.

Not only was the cottage build around a tree, the restaurant of the trout farm, was also build around an enormous fig tree.  In the foreground a few branches of a different tree, but you get the idea when you see the massive trunk in the middle and the foliage about the tented roof.

As you often have here in Kenya, there were all kinds of nosey visitors.  The kids were not sure if they liked the Colobus monkeys or not, but they certainly came close to us.

While the onlookers were sitting in the forest around us, there was also lots of time to explore in the rushing river.

We also had a chance to drive a few miles onward to the equator, a place well sign-posted and explored for commercial opportunities.

I love it how shops are named in this country.  Full of opportunity and flair.

For those of you who are good at geography, you would know that we were just alongside Kenya's highest mountain all along: Mount Kenya.  A quite impressive mountain, which I managed to summit a few years back.  However, on this trip we only saw its outlines in the morning haze just once, and for the rest it was mostly veiled in clouds like this

Weekend Trip to Masai Country

We just returned from a weekend away from the city.  We visited the beautiful Masai countryside near Kisamis, just an hour South of Nairobi.  With the in-laws visiting it is also nice to get to parts of the country that they have not yet seen.

The views from the house we were at were breathtaking and worth the drive on the bumpy potholed road.  The simplicity and slowness of how life is lived in that area are just amazing and so relaxing.  It makes one wonder why we appear to be in such a hurry each day, while the main focus is to live life and herd your cattle. . . .  Certainly an easy question to ask if we live with the luxury of housing, running water, electricity and no worry on what our next meal will be.  It's also an eyeopener for our kids each time we travel, they see how the majority of the Kenyans live a different life from those of us in the city.

Here are some impressions of the trip.  We also took a side trip to Olorgsailie, a pre-historic site where you can be amazed about tools and artifacts that are approximately 980.000 years old.  That puts our lives really in perspective. . .

New Sewing - Yoga/Pilates Mat Bag

I like doing my Pilates, especially since it is one of the few activities I can still do with my knees.  After finally finding an appropriate mat here in Kenya I needed something to protect it and to carry it to classes.  I sewed up a bag out of converted jeans in combination with a nice kikoy fabric.  Recently someone asked me to make a similar one for them, here are two results.  These also have a recycled jeans pocket to store away keys or a mobile phone.

Ik hou ervan om mijn Pilates te doen, zeker omdat het een van de weinige dingen is die ik nog kan doen met mijn slechte knieen.  Nadat ik eindelijk een geschikte Pilates mat had gevonden hier in Kenia, had ik iets nodig om de mat in te beschermen en om mee te nemen naar de lessen.  Ik maakte een tas uit een oude spijkerbroek, gecombineerd met een vrolijke kikoy.  Pas geleden vroeg iemand me om zo'n tas ook voor haar te maken, en hier zijn twee resultaten.  Deze twee tassen hebben ook een extra zakje voor sleutels of mobiele telefoons omdat ik de achterzak van de jeans erin verwerkt heb.

Zouden deze leuk zijn voor de winkel?

Fables and end of the year plays

It has been a bit quiet around here. . . The kids just closed school last week and that means lots of plays and activities to close the school year. For being a crafty mama, that also means that I get called upon to help with the costumes, so the last month is extra busy!  Since my daughter is in class 2 at the Nairobi Waldorf School, it means that they covered the fables this year.  Her teacher created a short play using two of the fables and needed some matching costumes.  We went with new masks for the animals and pieced together the remainder of the costumes for the nine animals that were portrayed in the play.  Below is a taste of my creations, the elephant, the cheetah and the wolf . . .

Het is een beetje stil geweest op mijn blog. . . De kinderen hebben net hun schooljaar afgesloten en dat betekend heel wat toneelstukjes en andere activiteiten.  En als een creatieve mama, betekend het ook dat ik vaak gevraagd wordt om met de kostuums te helpen, dus de laatste maand is extra druk!  Mijn dochter was klas 2 van de Nairobi Waldorf School dit jaar, dus hadden ze de fabels behandeld.  Haar juf had een kort toneelstuk geschreven dat twee fabels combineerde en ze had passende kostuums nodig.  We hebben nieuwe maskers gemaakt en die gecombineerd met al bestaande stukken uit de school garderobe om de negen dieren uit te drukken.  Hierboven een idee hoe mijn creaties eruit zagen: de olifant, de cheetah en de wolf. . .

Winter arrived

It has been rather chilly in the last week, a clear sign that winter arrived in Nairobi.  I have been longing for a fire place or even a heater. . . it would be nice to turn one of those on rather than putting on the socks and warm clothes.  The houses here are mainly build to keep out the heat, and that they certainly do!

The cold did inspire me to adjust our nature table and give it a clear winter look.  I just have one question: do your gnomes also always end up on the Nature table after a few days?  After one day, our nature table always becomes interactive!

Het is hier erg koel de laaste week, een hint dat winter is aangebroken in Nairobi.  I verlang af en toe naar een open haard, een kachel, or gewoon een centrale verwarming. . . het zou erg lekker zijn om een van die drie aan te maken, i.p.v. de sokken en warme kleding aan te trekken.  De huizen hier zijn gebouwd om de warmte buiten de deur te houden, en dat doen ze zeker!

Maar de kou heeft mij wel geinspireerd om onze seizoenstafel te veranderen en het een winters thema te geven.  Maar ik heb een vraag aan jullie: Komen jullie kabouters ook altijd op de seizoenstafel terecht? Na een dag lijkt onze tafel altijd interactief te worden!
