No Snow but Rainbows

We came on our Christmas trip to Germany ready for snow. . . unfortunately the weather has been unseasonably warm and there has been no snow (except for that on the mountain tops). 

On the upside though, there was a beautiful rainbow the other day. . .

We kwamen op onze reis naar Duitsland klaar voor sneeuw. . . Helaas is het ongebruikelijk warm weer en er is geen sneeuw te zien (tot op in de bergen na dan).  

Maar daar tegenover zagen we een prachtige regenboog de ​​andere dag. . .

Happy Holidays

I am enjoying my time with my family here in Germany, although it is way to warm for this time of the year and the kids have been longing for snow. . . I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will still happen while we are here.

The Light in the Lantern

I have been taking it easy now that the Holidays are nearby.  However, I am again sharing a Holiday Tradition over at the Natural Kids Team blog, about an advent calendar in stories. . .

Smart Phone Cover Tutorial

Here it finally is, the tutorial to make a quick smart phone cover.  A simple idea for a last minute gift!

All you really need is some pieces of wool felt and sewing thread.  I did mine with a sewing machine, but you can also handsew with a blanket stitch.  I used a cookiecutter shape to make an easy reverse applique star.  The double felt top gives some extra protection to the display.

First, trace your phone on a piece of paper, to create a pattern.  Add some millimeters to the sides to ensure that you will have a large enough pouch (for the thickness of the phone - 3 to 5mm should do)

Cut out the pattern and cut it three times out of the felt.

Pin two contrasting pieces of felt together and trace a shape in a magic fabric marker.  BTW - don't you love the warning text on this one?  I guess they did a lot of research to find many people holding the fabric with one hand, and marker in the other to then use your teeth to remove the cap ;-)

Then stitch the shape through the two layers of felt.  Follow the shape two times.

With a seem ripper, carefully remove the top layer of the shape, to show the contrasting colour felt.

Stich the two layers of felt together at the top.

Then pin the back side to the front and stitch the sides and the bottom.

Trim the outside seams to make them even, and you are ready!

Advent Baking

We finally managed to get some advent time baking done today, much later than we would have liked to, but it has been a busy last week of school with end of term plays.  Here's the result of our first session, and we decided against decorating them as we really want to taste the biscuits quickly.  The next batch will be fancy and colorfully decorated!

We zijn er eindelijk in geslaagd om wat advents koekjes te bakken vandaag, veel later dan we wilden, maar het was een drukke laatste schoolweek. Hier is het resultaat van onze eerste bak-sessie, en we besloten om ze maar niet te decoreren deze keer, we wilden ze liever direkt proeven. De volgende partij koekjes zal mooi en kleurrijk versierd worden!

St. Nicholas Surprise

You know now that even in Kenya we are celebrating St. Nicholas, as the kids get older they also get to experience the Dutch tradition that is similar to 'the Secret Santa' tradition in many English language cultures, but the Dutch one involves crafting!

In my daughter's Dutch language class the kids drew names a few weeks back, with the intention to give the classmate on the ticket a gift and wrap it creatively.  We call it a 'surprise' (imagine a native Dutch speaker pronouncing this English word :-) ).

The gift we bought was in a regular box.  We decided to hide the box in 'the big book of St. Nicholas', in this book all the names of the kids in the world have been recorded along with their deeds. . .

It took us some time to create the base box and it's secret compartment, but it was a lovely experience to do this together.  She liked her first taste and is looking forward to making many more in the future.

Mijn dochter volgt (na-schoolse) Nederlandse les hier in Nairobi, en in haar klas trokken ze een paar weken geleden lootjes voor de Sinterklaas surprise.  Zie hier het boek van Sinterklaas dat we samen maakten en waarin we het kadootje verstopten.

Ze heeft de smaak te pakken, en we kijken uit naar meer surprises in de toekomst!

Smart Phone Cover

A few weeks back I finally let go of my Nokia and bought a entry level Smart Phone.  Since I purchased an entry level, there was no protective cover available for the phone here in Kenya.  BUT, no worries, one can always make one!  I just did exactly that with one of my favorite materials: woolfelt.  Easy to work with, soft and protective.  Here's the result.

I took some pictures while working on it so I will be posting a tutorial soon, stay tuned!  It might make a quick last-minute gift for someone you know!

Een paar weken terug ben ik eindelijk overstag gegaan en heb mijn Nokia ver
wisseld voor een eenvoudige Smart Phone. Aangezien ik een eenvoudig model kocht was er geen beschermhoes beschikbaar voor dit model hier in Kenia. MAAR, geen zorgen, men kan er altijd een maken!  En dat deed ik dus ook met een van mijn favoriete materialen: wolvilt.  Gemakkelijk om mee te werken, zacht en beschermend.  Zie hier het resultaat.

Ik nam tijdens het werk ook een paar foto's, dus ik zal binnenkort ook een tutorial plaatsen, hou deze plek in de gaten!  Het kan zijn dat je nog even snel een gemakkelijk kadootje nodig hebt!

Alternative Advent Wreath

In our house advent cannot be celebrated without an advent wreath.  We generally have a nice green wreath that we purchase at the local German Christmas Market, but this year we will be half of the time in Nairobi, and the other half in Germany visiting the in-laws.  My daughter and I set out to create an alternative wreath.

We placed four candles on a glass plate and surrounded them with red and silver glass star Christmas ornaments, we then added some clear glass marbles and we were ready!  A simple modern looking wreath.  Its first candle was lit today by my firstborn. . .

Happy advent!

In ons huis kan de advents tijd niet gevierd worden zonder een adventskrans. We hebben over het algemeen een mooie groene krans die wij op de lokale Duitse kerstmarkt kopen, maar dit jaar zijn we maar de helft van de adventstijd in Nairobi, en de andere helft in zijn we in Duitsland. Mijn dochter en ik besloten dus om een alternatieve krans maken dit jaar.

We plaatsten vier kaarsen geplaatst op een glazen schotel, en plaatsten rode en zilveren glazen ster kest ornamenten om de kaarsen heen, we maakten het geheel af door er nog een paar glazen knikkers bij te leggen en voila!  Klaar! Een eenvoudige en moderne advents krans. De eerste kaars werd vandaag aangestoken door mijn dochter. . .

Special Visitors to Nairobi

Guess who was visiting Nairobi yesterday?  My three were very happy to meet Sinterklaas and the five Pieten that came along. . .

Raad eens wie er Nairobi bezocht gisteren?  Mijn drie waren erg blij om Sint en de vijf begeleidende Pieten te ontmoeten. . .

Prepping for the Charity Bazaar

It has been quiet here.  I have been working on items for the German Christmas Charity Bazaar that is taking place this Saturday here in Nairobi (113 Riverside Drive, from 11h00 onwards), in addition I have been nursing some sick little ones and tried to cope with several day-long power outages.  The latter are the worst when you are trying to meet some deadlines.  However, instead of showing you what my workspace looks like, I rather use this lovely work in progress photo again. . .

Het is rustig geweest hier op de blog.  Ik ben aanhet werk voor creaties voor de Duitse Kerstmarkt van aanstanade zaterdag hier in Nairobi (113 Riverside Drive, vanaf 11u00), daarlangs hadden we een paar zieke kinderen, en probeerde ik te wennen aan de dag-lange stroomstoringen die we hier met grote regelmaat hebben. Deze laatste zijn de ergste wanneer je een ​​aantal deadlines hebt. . . Maar in plaats van laten zien hoe mijn werkruimte er op het moment uit ziet, plaats ik liever deze mooie werk in progressie foto weer. . .

Dyeing Wool with Kids

The fun project that I did with my 4-year old the other day was dyeing wool with food colour.  With the use of an acid (vinegar in this case) you can dye protein fibers such as wool and silk easily with food colour.  It's quite an easy project with magical results!

There are some simple things you need:

• Wool yarn
• Food colour
• Vinegar
• Plastic gloves (food dye can stain your hands for a day or two)
• Cling wrap / old towel
• A microwave (alternatively use a steaming pot or the sun)

Het leuke project dat mijn 4-jarige en ik vorige week deden was het verven van wol met voedingskleurstof.  Met het gebruik van een zuur (azijn in dit geval) kun je proteine vezels zoals wol en zijde gemakkelijk met voedingskleurstof verven.  Een heel gemakkelijk project met magische resultaten!

Er zijn een paar eenvoudige dingen die je nodig hebt:

•      wollen garen
•     voedings kleurstof
•      azijn
•      plastic handschoenen (voedings kleurstof kan een dag of twee je huid kleuren)
•      plastic folie / oude handdoek
•      magnetron (of als alternatief gebruik maken van een stoompan of de zon)

Weekend Walk

We decided to take an early walk on Sunday morning with some friends and their two dogs at the Primate Research Sanctuary in Karen.  It's a lovely forested area in Karen (where the once famous Karen Blixen lived) that is part of the National Museums of Kenya and a quick get-away from the city.

We have been there of several walks before and still have to encounter any monkeys though. . . we see those daily at the Waldorf Kindergarten in Kileleshwa which is closely situated near the Nairobi Arboretum.  It might be a fact that we scare them away as they hear us coming from afar as we talk and walk.  However, we are not going to see monkeys, we are there to enjoy each other's company and be out in nature.  We did easily spot several columns of 'Safari ants' (or Siafu Ants) notorious with the kids for their painful bite. . .

Afterwards we headed to 'Marula Studios' for a late breakfast.  Marula is a fun place where one can find a shop with a lot of recycled products, as well as a recycling hub, a small restaurant and a lovely garden with an playground with a great innovative floor: recycled flip flops.

We besloten om zondagochtend een vroege wandeling te maken met vrienden en hun twee honden in de Primate Research Sanctuary in Karen. Het is een mooie bosrijke omgeving in Karen (waar de eens beroemde Karen Blixen leefde) dat deel uitmaakt van de Nationale Musea van Kenia en op een korte afstand van de stad is gelegen.
  
We hebben er verschillende keren een wandeling gemaakt, maar tot nu toe zijn we nog steeds geen apen tegenkomen.  Alhoewel we die dagelijks zien bij de Waldorf Kleuterschool in Kileleshwa die  vlak bij het Nairobi Arboretum ligt.  We jagen de apen waarschijnlijk weg omdat ze ons luid en duidelijk aan horen komen als we lopen en praten.  Maar we gaan niet om apen te zien, wij zijn er om van elkaars gezelschap te genieten en in de natuur te zijn. We hebben echter gemakkelijk een aantal kolommen van de 'Safari mieren' (ook wel Siafu mieren) kunnen vinden.  Deze zijn berucht bij de kinderen voor hun pijnlijke beet. . .

Na onze wandeling zijn we naar Marula Studios gegaan voor een laat ontbijt. Marula is een leuke plek waar een winkel met veel gerecyclede producten vind, evenals een recycling-hub, een klein restaurant, en een mooie tuin met een speeltoestel met een innovatieve vloer te vinden: gerecyclede teenslippers.

A New Crafting Experience

I attended my first felting workshop today.  It was a lovely experience to create an angel and a fairy.  My 8-year old joined in as well.  We found it a nice craft to learn, and I suspect that we will be felting more often.

Ik heb vandaag in mijn eerte workshop 'vilten' deelgenomen. Het was een leuke ervaring om een engel en een fee te creëren. Mijn 8-jarige dochter deed ook mee. We vonden het een leuke techniek om te leren, en ik vermoed dat we het nu vaker gaan doen. . .

Z stond erop om foto's te maken van onze creaties, dus bij deze.
