Piñata Time Again!

I'm thrown back into the saddle of motherhood, organising a birthday party within a few days of my return.  A birthday party in our family requires the traditional piñata.  It became a quick and simple version this time around as I only had three rainy days to make it - do I miss heating in our house at these times. An octopus it became. . .

Ik ben weer terug in het moederschap, binnen een paar dagen van mijn terugkeer uit Nederland, is het weer tijd om een verjaardagsfeestje te organiseren. Een verjaardagsfeestje in onze familie vereist de traditionele piñata.  Het was een snelle en eenvoudige versie deze keer want ik had maar drie regenachtige dagen om het te maken - ik mis verwarming in ons huis op deze tijden. Het werd een octopus. . .

On a Birthday Safari - Part 2

The highlight of a kids birthday party is often the cake, but at our house that has taken a backseat in the past years to the piñata!

Between 4 kids I have made quite a few piñatas in the past years, from easy to more complicated. . .  It's a rather simple craft that basically requires baloons, old newspaper, flour, water, some paint/crepe paper, but the main element is time!  Planning is key in creating the piñata as it takes a while to dry the paper-mache shape properly.

This year's wish was pretty simple: a monkey.  Hence the safari theme emerged!  I choose to make only the monkeys head.  While there were some objections to hitting a monkey on the head, after some hesitation everyone took turns to get the sweet treasures out!

By the way, our zebra cake did come out very well thanks to this tutorial that I found on Pinterest, along with the inspiration for the monkey.

Het hoogtepunt van een kinderpartijtje is vaak de taart, maar bij ons in huis is het tegenwoordig de piñata!

Met 4 kinderen heb ik nogal wat piñatas gemaakt in de afgelopen jaren. Van een eenvoudig tot een  iets meer ingewikkelde. . . Het is een vrij eenvoudige knutselpartij die in principe alleen maar ballonnen, oude kranten, bloem, water, wat verf / crêpepapier vereist, maar ook hoofdzakelijk tijd!  Plannen staat centraal in het creëren van deze piñatas omdat het papier mache goed moet drogen.
 
De wens van mijn jongste zoon dit jaar was vrij eenvoudig: een aap.  Vandaar dat het safari thema ook aangegrepen werd! Ik koos ervoor om alleen het apenhoofd te maken. Hoewel er een aantal bezwaren waren om de aap op het hoofd te slaan, na enige aarzeling deed toch iedereen mee om de zoete schatten eruit te krijgen!

By the way, onze zebra taart was erg goed geslaagd dankzij deze tutorial die ik op Pinterest vond, samen met de inspiratie voor de aap.

On a Birthday Safari - Part 1

The youngest boy turned 6 last week and we organised a safari party.  It was my first themed party and it was great fun organising it.  I have to admit that I can now clearly understand why people organise a party around a theme, it is so much easier!  Although, here in Kenya it is basically impossible to find the matching party decor for themed parties, so you have to be creative and do a lot of DIY crafting.

The kids all selected an animal mask to colour and then we pretended to be the animals, while the adults took a safari though the 'Boffar Game Reserve.'  It was a wild affair with monkeys and leopards in the trees, cheetahs, lions, and gazelles on the plains and crocodiles in the river!

De jongste zoon werd afgelopen week 6 en we een safari feestje georganiseerd. Het was mijn eerste thema feest en het was erg leuk om te organiseren. Ik moet toegeven dat ik nu begrijp waarom mensen een partijtje organiseren rond een thema, het is zo veel makkelijker!  Alhoewel het hier in Kenia bijna onmogelijk om het bijpassende decor voor themafeesten te vinden, dus dan moet je zelf aan het werk.

De kinderen kozen ieder een dierenmasker om in te kleuren en vervolgens deden we alsof we die dieren waren, terwijl de volwassenen op een ​​safari gingen door het 'Boffar Game Reserve.' Het was een wilde affaire met apen en luipaarden in de bomen, jachluipaarden, leeuwen en gazelles op de vlakten en krokodillen in de rivier!

Catching Up - 2 - Birthday Celebration

Our little Babe's second birthday was in the middle of November.  Normally a second birthday does not warrant a big celebration outside of the family since the little one is not that aware of the big event.  However, the siblings that are 5, 7 and 9 were hoping for a bigger event, especially since it was her first celebration as part of our family.  We invited a few of her friends and had a celebration in the garden, including a piñata.  Mama-made piñatas are synonymous with birthday parties at our home, and I enjoy coming up with a new creation each time.  The simple joy that one can create with some newspaper, glue and some crêpe-paper is amazing.

A rainbow fish was my first creation for the Babe, but two-year olds are not keen on hitting a piñata, so the older kids took charge of opening it to release the treasure.

 

In het midden van november werd onze Babe twee. Normaal gezien wordt een tweede verjaardag niet met een feestje buiten de familie gevierd sinds het kleintje zich nog niet zo bewust is van verjaardagen.  De broers en zus zijn echter 5, 7 en 9 en hoopten op een groter feestje dan alleen taart eten en zingen, vooral omdat het was haar eerste viering was in onze familie.  We nodigden een paar vrienden en vriendinnetjes uit en hadden een feestje in de tuin met een piñata. Mama's piñatas staat synoniem voor verjaardagsfeestjes bij ons thuis, en ik geniet ervan om iedere keer weer een nieuwe creatie te maken. De eenvoudige vreugde die men kan creeren met een aantal kranten, lijm en crêpe-papier is verbazingwekkend.

Een regenboog vis was mijn eerste creatie voor de Babe, maar twee-jarigen zijn niet enthousiast over het slaan van een piñata., dus de oudere kinderen namen de leiding in het te openen om de schat vrij te geven.

Birthday Preparations

Our little Babe will be celebrating her 2nd birthday this Saturday and whilst I am in a crafting mode for the various Holiday markets that are around the corner here in Nairobi, I had to take a moment to create a special crown.  The little one loves it and I hope that she will continue to wear it with as much enthusiasm as she did in the testing round today.

There's a lot going on at the moment, but I am considering to offer custom orders for these soon!

Onze kleine Babe viert haar 2e verjaardag a.s. zaterdag.  Terwijl ik in een crafting-modus ben voor de verschillende kerstmarkten hier in Nairobi, moest ik een moment nemen om een ​​speciale kroon voor haar te creëren. Het kleintje vindt hem heel erg leuk en ik hoop dat ze hem zal blijven dragen met hetzelfe enthousiasme als ze deed in het test ronde vandaag.

Football Piñata

One of the activities that has become a tradition at our birthday parties is the piñata.  A fun activity at the party which we tend to organize without hiring bouncing castles and such.  It's always mom and dad running some activities and games with the kids.

Since my son turned 7 and invited mainly boys to his party, I decided to reinforce the piñata little bit this year.  It was made in four stages, and was it tough to crack!  I overestimated the boys hitting power in such a way that even the adults joined in later to take a hit at it.  However, it did show that even seven year olds have focus and determination, they queued up nicely each time to take turns at opening the treasure!

Eén van de activiteiten die is uitgegroeid tot een traditie op onze verjaardagsfeestjes is de piñata. Een leuke activiteit op het feest waarop we geneigd zijn om plezier te hebben zonder springkussens en andere entertainers in te huren. Het zijn altijd papa en mama die de activiteiten en spelletjes met de kinderen doen.

Aangezien mijn zoon 7 werd en vooral jongens uitnodigde op zijn partijtje, besloot ik om de piñata een beetje te versterken dit jaar. Hij werd in vier fasen gemaakt en bleek heel erg moeilijk om te kraken! Ik overschatte de kracht van de jongens op een zodanige wijze dat zelfs volwassenen later deelnamen aan het slaan op de piñata. Het heeft echter wel laten zien dat zelfs zevenjarigen focus en vastberadenheid hebben, ze stonden telkens keurig in de rij voor hun beurt bij het ​​openen van de schat!

It has been some time since I last was here.  May is a busy month at our house, we have three birthdays to celebrate: one boy, one girl and one papa!  This time around I was also involved in organizing two fundraisers for our kids Waldorf School, so in a period of 14 days we had 2 major school events, 2 birthdays and 2 birthday parties.  Now we have papa's birthday to go. . .

Creative time for the shop has been very limited, but I finally found some time to work on a custom order.  It's great to be back being creative again.

Het is een tijdje geleden sinds mijn laatste berichtje.  Mei is een drukke maand in onze familie, we vieren drie verjaardagen: één jongen, één meisje en één papa!  Maar deze maand was ik ook betrokken bij twee fundraisers voor de Waldorf School van onze kinderen, dus in een periode van 14 dagen hadden we 2 grote school evenementen, 2 verjaardagen en 2 partijtjes.  Nu nog papa's verjaardag. . .

Creatieve tijd voor de winkel was heel erg krap, maar ik heb eindelijk een beetje tijd gevonden om aan een bestelling te werken.  Het voelt super aan om weer een beetje creatief bezig te zijn.

Best Chocolate Cake Ever. . .

Pinterest is a great place!  Through that medium I found a recipe for a fantastic chocolate cake.  I tried the recipe for the birthday party and I must say together with the help of Betty C's chocolate and vanilla frosting it was a huge success.  This will be my go-to recipe in the future, easy to make and really delicious.

Pinterest is een geweldige plek! Door middel van dit medium vond ik een recept voor een fantastische chocoladetaart. Ik probeerde het recept voor het verjaardagsfeestje en ik moet zeggen dat samen met de hulp van  Betty C's chocolade en vanille glazuur het een groot succes was. Dit wordt mijn go-to recept in de toekomst, gemakkelijk te maken en echt lekker.

The Rocket Piñata

Finally I can reveal the result of my piñata for this party. . . Loads of fun once again, but a tough one for the kids to crack.  Note that it was not duct taped together, silver spraypaint did the job!

Eindelijk kan ik het resultaat van mijn piñata voor dit partijtje onthullen. . . De kinderen hadden een hele klus om hem te kraken, maar het werd met heel veel plezier gedaan. Merk wel dat de raket niet met duct tape in elkaar geplakt was, zilverkleurige spraypaint deed het werk!

Birthday Party Crafting

We celebrated the birthday of my baby boy this weekend.  He's 5! Where has the time gone since I held this precious bundle in my arms minutes after giving birth?

We like to celebrate our children's birthdays without big colourful jumping castles, trampolines, clowns, acrobats, magicians, or the like.  Crafting and simple outside games are our style.  The benefit of living in Kenya is that you can use your garden basically year around, and all our kids parties mainly take place outside.

For this party I planned a craft to be done by children the between the ages of 3 and 11: decorate craft-felt masks with glitter and water paint.  The kids enjoyed it a lot, but had their own take on it as always.  I purposefully made a white/a light coloured side to each mask to make the crafting more visible and painting easier.  As it turns out, this was typical adult thinking.  Few of the kids used that side and they all made their own beautiful creations their way.

A friend suggested to make these for the shop?  Do you think these would be fun?

We vierden de verjaardag van mijn zoontje dit weekend. Hij is 5! Hoe snel gaat de tijd?

Wij proberen de verjaardag van onze kinderen te vieren zonder grote kleurrijke luchtkussenkastelen, trampolines, clowns, acrobaten, goochelaars en dergelijke. Knutselen en eenvoudige spelletjes zijn onze stijl. Het voordeel van het leven in Kenia is dat je de tuin in principe het hele jaar kunt gebruikenjaar rond, en al onze kinderen partijen voornamelijk plaatsvinden buiten.

Voor dit feest had ik een bezigheid geplant die alle kinderen (3-11 jaar) konden doen: acryl vilt maskers met glitter en waterverf versieren (carnaval?!?!).  Het was een leuke bezigheid, maar de kinderen gaven er hun eigen draai aan zoals altijd. Ik had bewust een witte / lichte gekleurde kant aan elk masker gemaakt om de decoraties en het verven gemakkelijker te maken. Typisch het denken van een volwassene! Slechts een paar van de kinderen gebruikten die kant, maar ze maakten allen hun eigen mooie creaties.

Een vriendin stelde voor om setjes te maken voor de winkel.  Denk je dat dat een goed idee is?

Piñata time

It is becoming a tradition to have a 'mama-made piñata' our kids' birthday party.  The little one is turning 5 this week and after asking what needed to be at the party, it was clear: "cake and a

piñata".  I have started working on the piñata in order for it to be ready by Saturday when his classmates and some friends come over to celebrate.

Once in a blue moon it would be nice to be able to just run to a shops and buy all items for a party, but then, it is also great to create your own things and traditions for lasting memories. Piñata's are rather easy to put together if you start on time and they create loads of excitement at the party.

Can you guess what it will be?

 Het wordt stilaan een traditie om een 'door-​​mama-gemaakte piñata' op het verjaardagsfeestje van onze kinderen te hebben. De kleinste wordt deze week 5 en op de vraag wat er bij zijn feestje nodig was, was het antwoord duidelijk: "taart en een piñata ".  Ik ben aan de piñata begonnen, zodat hij zaterdag klaar is als zijn klasgenootjes en een paar vriendjes op bezoek komen om te vieren.

Af en toe zou het handig zijn also je gewoon naar de winkel zou kunnen gaan voor alle dingen voor een feestje, maar het is ook wel leuk om je eigen spullen en tradities te creëren.  Ik neem aan dat deze partijtjes bij de kinderen in herinnering blijven. Piñata's zijn vrij eenvoudig om te maken zoalng je tijdig begint, en ze zorgen altijd voor veel opwinding op het feestje.

Super Hero or Prince?

A little friend of ours is having his third birthday party tomorrow.  He likes to be a super hero, so I made him a new silk cape and felt mask.  The silk cape has a velcro closure so that he can easily put on himself since he is a 'big' boy.  I am hoping that soon he will also use the silk cape for being a prince!

Een klein vriendje van ons viert morgen zijn derde verjaardag.  Hij vind het leuk om een super held te zijn, dus heb ik hem een zijden cape en vilten masker gemaakt.  Nu dat hij een 'grote' jongen is kan hij de zijden cape gemakkelijk zelf aandoen door de klitteband sluiting.  Ik hoop dat hij binnenkort de zijden cape ook gebruikt om prins te zijn!

Birthday Present for Papa

The last May birthday in our family was today, so I can reveal the present that the kids made for my husband.  A hand print sun 'painting'.  Since we have a 4, 6 and 8 year old now, the birthday present making has become more important to them.  Maus and I decided that we would make a painting with hand and/or foot prints of the 3 musketeers, but didn't know the theme exactly.  Pinterest to the rescue!  Such a wonderful source of information for a visual person like myself.  We glanced through the ideas, Maus picked her favourite and we went to work.

We picked a canvas size, we then put acrylic paint on their hands (one child at a time!) and printed the border.  Maus in red, Kleine Mann in orange and Babycakes in yellow.  At the end we made the body of the sun in the middle and we ready was "Your Sunshine".  It was difficult to contain the excitement until this morning's birthday breakfast for Papa.  He was very happy with his present.  The 3 Musketeers also decided that it should hang extra special: as a diamond, not as a 'regular' painting.

De laatste Mei verjaardag in onze familie is vandaag, dus ik kan het kado dat de kinderen voor mijn echtgenoot gemaakt hebben nu laten zien.  Een hand-afdruk-zon-schilderij.  Nu dat we 4, 6 en 8 jaar oude kinderen hebben is het kadootjes maken voor hun erg belangrijk.  Maus en ik besloten samen om een schilderij te maken met hand- en/of voetafdrukken van de 3 Musketiers, maar het thema was niet erg duidelijk.  Pinterest was dus de redder!  Het is een super vorm van informatie voor een visueel ingesteld persoon zoals ik.  We keken door de borden, Maus selecteerde haar favoriet en we gingen aan het werk.

We selecteerden een canvas doek dat ik nog in huis had, deden acryl verf op hun handen (een kind per keer!) en drukten zo de handen rand.  Maus in rood, Kleine Mann in oranje en Babycakes in geel.  Later verfden we het zonnelichaam in het midden en we klaar was "Your Sunshine".  Het was moeilijk voor ze om hun opwinding een paar dagen in bedwang te houden tot papa's verjaardagsontbijt vanochtend.  Hij was erg blij met zijn kado.  De 3 Musketiers besloten ook dat het niet 'gewoon' aan de muur moet hangen, maar speciaal: als een ruit.

Dragon Piñata

We celebrated 'Kleine Mann's' 6th birthday today with his friends.  His dream was to have a piñata and a treasure hunt at his party among a crafty bit and some other games.  The treasure hunt wish did not come through since the weather was pretty bad all week and we only knew an hour before the party that it was taking place outside in the garden as planned.  The first wish was granted, in form of a Dragon Piñata.  Thanks to this lovely tutorial at Couturier Mommy I created this creature. It was a bit stressful due to the heavy rains and bad drying, but a plug in heater, a possession from another life in another country did come to the rescue.

We hebben vandaag 'Kleine Mann's' 6de verjaardag gevierd met zijn vriendjes en vriendinnetjes.  Het was zijn droom om een piñata en een speurtocht te hebben, want het knutselen en andere spelletjes zijn vanzelfsprekend.  De speurticht wens konden we helaas niet vervullen omdat het de hele week al flink geregend heeft en we tot een uur voor aanvang niet zeker wisten of we het partijtje buiten zouden hebben zoals gepland.  De grootste wens werd echter vervuld in vorm van een Draak Piñata .  Dankzij deze tutorial bij Couturier Mommy heb ik de piñata gecreeerd.  Het kwam net op het nippertje allemaal samen dankzij een kleine verwarming, een bezit uit een ander leven in een ander land.

Ik heb een staf met lint tutorial geschreven die vandaag te vinden is op het NaturalKids Team blog.  Het is in het Engels geschreven, maar via de foto's wel gemakkelijk te volgen.  Ga eens kijken, en misschien wel maken?  Het is een gemakkelijke en leuke activiteit voor en met kinderen.  Op ons verjaardags partijtje is gebleken dat het erg leuk was en voor uren speelplezier zorgde.

Another handmade birthday present

The Man has taken the boys to surprise their grandfather for his birthday, and a surprise it was, I learned.  Now it is the boys travelling and the girls at home for the week, as we decided that Maus stays behind with me since she is in primary school.

The actual birthday is tomorrow, so I can finally share our handmade birthday present with you.

One needs:

• 3 plain wooden picture frames (I found mine at a local charity shop)
• paint
• glitter and glittery shapes
• glue

I put all of this out for the kids and they started, all three in their own way:

As soon as their creations dried, I Mod Podged them to ensure that the glitter stays on and we have three lovely gifts ready for their grandfather:

De Man is samen met de jongens op reis om opa te verassen voor zijn verjaardag, en ik hoorde dat hun komst inderdaad een grote verassing was.  Dus nu zijn de jongens op reis en de meiden zijn samen thuis voor een week, omdat we besloten hadden dat Maus niet mee kon omdat ze anders een week school zou missen.
De verjaardag is morgen dus kan ik eindelijk de handgemaakte kadootjes met jullie delen.

Ik nam:

• 3 blank houten foto lijstjes (die van mij heb ik in een tweede hands winkel gevonden)
• verf
• glitter en glitter vormpjes
• lijm

Ik heb dit alles voor de kinderen op tafel gezet en ze begonnen, alle drie op hun eigen manier.

Toen alles droog was heb ik er nog 2 lagen Mod Podge op gestreken zodat de glitter er niet vanaf valt en toen hadden we drie leuke lijstjes voor opa. 

Handmade birthday present

My baby boy will have travelled four times around the sun next week.  I have been working on a handmade gift out of my stash of felt, wool and felted sweaters.  I am pretty happy with the result and hope that he likes it as much as I do.  The gnome family is soon ready to move in!

 

 

Voor de verjaardag van de kleinste volgende week ben ik aan de slag gegaan met vilt, wol en vervilte truien die ik nog had liggen.  Zie hier het resultaat.  Ik hoop dat hij het net zo leuk vind als ik.  De kabouter familie is ook bijna klaar, dus binnenkort is het huisje bewoond.
