Jacaranda Seedpod Gnomes

My class 1 boy mentioned that he wanted to bring something to class for the nature table over the weekend.  First he selected some of our shell collection to bring along.   Since it is it is the season for the jacaranda seeds and it was an opportunity to do a fun craft together I also asked if he wanted to make a Jacaranda Seedpod Gnome.  Being the crafter of my the kids, he agreed to make some with me for class.  His sister also joined in on the session as well and here is the result.

I took some photo's along the way and will be writing up a tutorial, so please stay posted!  If you would like to purchase a ready made one in the meantime, you can find some here.

First Day of School & Some Gifts

It's official, I have two kids in primary school now!  My eldest son joined his sister in the daily trip to the Nairobi Waldorf School.  He has been so looking forward to it and suddenly seems so grown up.  There was a nice rose ceremony and off they went into the class. . . barely a goodbye left for the parents.

To continue the tradition of his German roots, he received a nicely filled 'Schultuete' from his grandparents, it had pencils, ersases, markers, etc, but also some sweets.  I also made some quick ones for his brother and sister, but they had just a few sweets in theirs.

Since class 1 is starting a day later than the rest of the school, we had also a morning to make some nice notebooks for his siblings, in the same manner as I made his.

We took a hardcover exercise book and a wet-on-wet painting from the kids, covered the book with Mod Podge and glued the paper tightly on the cover tightly.  We let it dry and then added another layer of Mod Podge on the outside to provide some protection to the paper.  They look great and kids are in awe.  I am happy I found this lovely idea here on Pinterest.

Natural Kids Wednesday

A feature on the Natural Kids Team blog, simply a photo of kids at play.

What would life be without sticks?

On Safari

We have had a busy time during the school holidays.  The in-laws were with us for five weeks, and then my husband's childhood friend and his family visited for three. A full house, but also a great opportunity to explore the beauty of Kenya with them.

We have been living in Kenya for five years now, but only now made our first trip to the famous Maasai Mara. The kids didn't mind spending hours at an end in the vehicle, as there were many beautiful sights of animals and landscapes.  I'm glad that the love for game viewing and travel has passed onto them as well.

I must admit, while a wildebeest has never been an impressive animal to me, the vast numbers of them due to their famous migration from the Seringeti to the Maasai Mara and back were truly impressive.  Below a selection of pics of this amazing three day family trip:
