Sun, Dust and Mud

A great combination: sun, dust and mud.  It's a combination we had on Sunday when our eldest participated in the 'Hog Charge'.  This annual event is the kids off-road biking version of the 'Rhino Charge', an annual off-road motor event to raise funds for the 'Rhino Ark'.

It was an early rise for the family to get on time to the farm just outside of Nairobi where the event takes place.  The mission for the teams is to reach each of the six checkpoints in the shortest possible time and route.  It was a fun event and a great teaching in cooperation, navigation, and team spirit.  The day was dusty and hot, the terrain at times very rough, but the four managed to reach all checkpoints within the given time.

When the goal is reached the teams are allowed to participate in the most fun part of the event: the 'Gauntlet Run'.  It is not as treacherous as it sounds, it is a small obstacle course that the teams have to negotiate with 3 bikers and one runner.  The obstacles consist out of logs, hills, car tyres, and the ultimate fun obstacle, a large mudpool.  It is this part of the race for which it is all done.  When else can a child ride waist deep through the mud to then slip and slide back into it?  The team also needs to work together to get the bicycles through this to the finish.

As our daughter told us: the best event ever!  The big boy is looking forward to the time that he will be able to participate as well.  Why not?  It is all in name of wild life conservation!
