The Result

I just wanted to share the result of yesterday's crown with you, and power went out again. . . I hope to list it in the next few days. . . granted that electricity is stable!

. . als we dus weer electriciteit hebben!

One of those days

Today is one of those days where I had planned to do a lot sewing.  Only to come back from the school run, start sewing, and then the electricity goes off.  It will be off for the rest of the day as the power company is improving its infrastructure.  Inconvenient for me to do it today, but something that is really necessary as well, as it will cause less 'spontaneous' outages during the rest of the week.

Well, it will allow me to ponder how to finish this rainbow crown.  It's the result out of my experiment in dyeing wool felt.

Easter Nature Table

Here's our latest nature table.  Eggs, eggs, eggs, a few rabbits, birds and some more eggs!  The kids decided that we needed to try to get all the eggs into the branches, or on the table.

Hier is onze nieuwste seizoens tafel.

Rainbow Festival

We had a lovely gathering of the three Waldorf Kindergartens here in Nairobi today at the Rainbow Festival.  A celebration to welcome the long rains. Loads of fun was to be had by all. Lots of running and games, followed by a fascinating story and a wholesome lunch. The future of Waldorf education in Nairobi looks good with so many kindergartners!

Easter is Around the Corner

It's that time of the year again.  Autumn has officially started in the Southern Hemisphere, but around the equator that does not have a lot of meaning.  We rather talk about the long rains, they slowly seem to have started as it was a gloomy day today.

It was perfect though to start decorating for our next celebration as Easter is around the corner. THE time to get the egg wreath out!  Home made some years back after some inspiration by Martha, but still doing the trick.

Do you decorate your house for Easter?

Making Lip Balm

My daughter and I set out to make our own lip balm over the school holiday.  It was such an exciting activity for her to create something you can use all the time.  She in particular needs to use a lot of lip balm here in the Nairobi climate.  The summer is rather dry here at this elevation.

Inspired by a recent post on the NaturalKids Team blog, we set out to make our own.  We had to adjust the recipe a little bit as not all ingredients are readily available here.  We used:
  • pure beeswax
  • coconut oil
  • almond oil
  • peppermint oil
We cut the beeswax (45 grams) into small pieces, and melted it in a glass jar.  Once fluid, we added the coconut oil (50 milliliters) and 1 table spoon of almond oil, stir it well.  Add 15 drops of essential oil and stir it again.  Pour the mixture in glass or aluminum jars and let it cool down, it's now ready to use on your lips and on your skin!

It was a lovely process for my daughter to experience, and she's remembering to use her lip balm now.  We have enough for a few months now, but next time I plan to use one part of beeswax to two parts of oil to make the balm a little more fluid.

Do you make your own body-care products as well once in a while?
Zoë's photo of the end result

We gebruikten:

  •      zuivere bijenwas
  •      kokosolie
  •      amandelolie
  •      pepermuntolie

Lightbox DIY

I decided at the beginning of the year that I need to do more with my Pinterest pins.  Rather than creating a continuously larger collection, I need to implement some of the ideas that I gather there.  One of my recent ones is the DIY Lightbox to do some product photography for the ziezo shop.

The principle of the box was easy enough, implementation is a bit more challenging in Kenya, as supplies are not always available.  A big box was not a problem, I asked for one at the local grocery store.  White tissue paper was a problem.  I checked at several places and found no white.  An alternative was found in my stash of paper: white crepe paper.  It was a great replacement, and I made my first product pics in the box.  They look great in my opinion, although the box can still be larger for my kind of products.

The life of the box was short-lived however, my little one bumped into it and it now had several tears in it.  Off to find another big box and some paper again.

If you are a crafter and take product pics, what do you use?  Do you have a good and easy DIY alternative?

Neem jij produkt fotos?

An Excercise in Patience

While I am writing this, we are still waiting for the Kenyan Presidential Election results to be confirmed.  It has been five days since the elections and we did a lot of outside playing and waiting. . .

This morning, while we were waiting again, I decided to do a simple needle felting project with the kids.  Two of our neighbours kids also joined in and we set out to make these cute bees for which Meagan at This Whole Family wrote a tutorial.  It's something I pinned right away and in the spirit of finally taking on some items from my Pinterest Boards, we started making bees.

The results are interesting in that 4 out of 6 bees were completed.  My middle child and his best friend completed theirs, while I did help my little one a lot, and did mine.  Needle felting is calming and relaxing for me, but my daughter and her best friend it was not.  They decided that it was taking to long. . . the garden was calling before they could finish theirs. Maybe one day they will have enough patience to finish them.

Counting the Votes. . .

The elections went reasonably peaceful on Monday.  The turnout was high and people stood in the queue's for many many hours in the hot sun!  A true exercise in democracy, there are few nations in the world where people have enough patience and desire to queue for many hours to cast their vote.

The counting commenced, but now 36 hours into the counting, barely 50% of the ballots have been counted.  Hopefully there will be a result by this evening, as the tension tends to rise when the results of the process are delayed. . . The world is watching closely, and we all are trying to stay positive in that there will not be any post-election violence this time around.

On a lighter note, I have not been crafting a lot, but feel honoured that Hannah from Like Mama~Like Daughter featured my horse-rein tutorial in her Eco-Kids Tuesday post.

Like Mama~Like Daughter mijn paarden teugels tutorial in haar Eco-Kids Tuesday centraal stelde.

Amani katika Kenya

Tomorrow the Kenyan elections are taking place.  As you might remember after the last ones, five years ago, there was a lot of post-election violence.  Over 1000 people lost their lives and many thousands more were displaced.  Many of them, are currently still living in IDP (internally displaced people) camps.

We gave our son, who was born five years ago in that tumultuous time, a KiSwahili middle name: Amani, which means Peace.  We hope it was not in vain.  We are hoping for the best, and stay positive in the fact that this time all will be peaceful and will stay peaceful.
