Kanga in Kenyan Traditions

A quick post about the traditions of the kanga.  I use it a lot for my sewing, but today I witnessed another traditional use of the colourful fabric.

A neighbour's daughter is getting married today and the best man was in our compound this morning with a large entourage to collect her and her family and to bring her to the wedding ceremony.  It is one of the exciting parts of the wedding process, which involved lots of music, singing, dance and 'negotiation'.  It is also a Kenyan tradition across the various tribes that the groom's entourage brings enough kangas to the bride's house to ensure that she can walk to the car over the kangas!  It was a lovely sight to see the colourful path of kangas laid out among the happy family, friends and neighbours.

Een snelle post over de tradities van de kanga. Ik gebruik ze veel voor mijn creaties, maar vandaag was ik getuige van een ander traditioneel gebruik van de kleurrijke stof.

Een buurmeisje trouwd vandaag en de beste man (getuige van de bruidegom) was in onze compound vanmorgen met een hele entourage om haar en haar familie te naar de de plaats van de huwelijksceremonie te brengen.  Het is een interessant gedeelte van het bruilofts proces, het ging gepaard met veel muziek, zang, dans en 'onderhandelingen'. Het is ook een Keniaanse traditie (in de meeste van de vele verschillende stammen) dat de entourage van de bruidegom genoeg kanga's naar het huis van de bruid brengt om ervoor te zorgen dat zij en haar familie over de kangas naar de auto kunnen lopen! Het was een prachtig gezicht om de kleurrijke pad van kangas te zien met de gelukkige familie, vrienden en buren.
