Green Fingers

A while back we had an avocado (from the tree in our garden) that has some roots in the pit already.  Rather than planting the pit like the kids normally do, I decided to look up on how I could grow the seed.  The helpfulness of the WWW!  We can learn something new each and every day.  After putting 3 toothpics in the pit, I balanced the pit on a glass filled with water, and the seed has began growing slowly but steadily to great excitement of the kids.

Yesterday, the same tree gave us another fruit with a rooted seed, only this time the seed was broken.  We are trying the same and hopefully get a full visual on what is happening in the middle of the seed. Needless to say that the kids will be watching this one closely!

I am not known for green fingers, rather the opposite.  However, we have high hopes that these seeds will eventually turn into fruitbearing trees. . .

Een paar weken geleden hadden we een avocado (van de boom in onze tuin) met een pit die al kleine wortels had.  Normaal gesproken planten de kinderen de pitten in de tuin, maar er gebeurt niets.  Dit keer heb ik op het internet opgezocht hoe je zo'n pit kunt laten groeien.  Het gemak van het WWW!  Je kunt iedere dag iets nieuws leren.  Nadat we 3 tandenstokers inde pit hadden gestoken, hebben we die op de rand van een glas met water gebalnaceerd en langzaam maar zeker zijn de wortels gegroeid en kwam er een groene scheut uit.  De kinderen zijn erg blij met dat resultaat.

Gisteren hadden we weer een avocado van diezelfde boom in de tuin, en ook in deze waren er wortels in de pit.  Maar dit keer was de pit gebroken, dus we hebben de helft met de wortels op een glas geplaatst en hopen dat het weer lukt.  Dit keer kunnen we waarschijnlijk heel duidelijk zien wat er in het midden van de pit gebeurd.  De kinderen zullen ook deze ontwikkelingen op de voet volgen!

Ik sta niet bekend voor mijn groene vingers, integendeel.  Maar onze hoop is hoog dat deze twee pitten zich uiteindelijk ontwikkelen in twee mooie bomen. . .

Super Hero or Prince?

A little friend of ours is having his third birthday party tomorrow.  He likes to be a super hero, so I made him a new silk cape and felt mask.  The silk cape has a velcro closure so that he can easily put on himself since he is a 'big' boy.  I am hoping that soon he will also use the silk cape for being a prince!

Een klein vriendje van ons viert morgen zijn derde verjaardag.  Hij vind het leuk om een super held te zijn, dus heb ik hem een zijden cape en vilten masker gemaakt.  Nu dat hij een 'grote' jongen is kan hij de zijden cape gemakkelijk zelf aandoen door de klitteband sluiting.  Ik hoop dat hij binnenkort de zijden cape ook gebruikt om prins te zijn!

A Different Nature Table

The other day I shared a glimpse of our Autumn nature table with you.  That display changed drastically overnight when a family of dragons arrived: Daddy, momy, baby and big brother. . . a creation and addition of my 4 year old.

* We are not very keen on plastic toys, but these Duplo blocks do provide hours of playing fun at end.

Vorige week deelde ik met jullie onze herfst seizoenstafel.  Die tafel is momenteel heel erg veranderd met de komst van een draken familie: Papa, mama, baby en grote broer. . . een creatie van mijn 4-jarige.

* Plastic speelgoed is niet erg in trek bij ons als ouders, maar deze Duplo blokken zorgen voor urenlang speelplezier.

Father's Day Present

Since we have an 8 year old now, mother's day and father's day have been 'celebrated' for the first time this year in our family.  A gift was needed for papa and after some thinking this eldest decided that a 'sun ctacher' for the office would be a good home-made present for him to enjoy.  The thought of having rainbows all over the office was very exciting.

We took a crystal that I had bought at the Waldorf EcoFair a few weeks back, and selected some recycled glass beads from this wonderful place and beaded a bead rainbow on top of the crystal.  A loop on the top for hanging, and we were ready with a really nice looking present!

I have a feeling that we might do the same for the class teachers. . . who won't smile when they see a rainbow?

Nu dat we een 8-jarige in huis hebben, hebben we voor de eerste keer moeder-en vaderdag 'gevierd' in onze familie dit jaar.  We hadden een kado nodig voor papa, en na een beetje overleg besloot onze oudste om een 'zonne vanger" voor zijn kantoor te maken.  De gedachte om overal in zijn kantoor regenbogen te zien was erg aantrekkelijk.

We namen een kristal die ik op de Waldorf EcoFair had gekocht vorige maand, en we selecteerden enkele gerecyclede glazen kralen van deze schittelende winkel.  We regen de kralen met visgaren boven op de kristal, tot slot maakten we er een grote lus op om het geheel op te hangen en we hadden een heel mooi kado!

Ik heb het gevoel dat de juffen eenzelfde kado krijgen over een paar weken. . . want wie glimlacht er nu niet bij het zien van een regenboog?

5 Sleeping Babies

I just finished a custom order for five sleeping baby bunting dolls this morning for a customer here in Nairobi who is travelling to Japan this weekend for a family visit.  I was fun to make these little African babies, and it made me wonder about their trip and their new homes.  It also feels great that people all over the world can enjoy my creations. . . One of the great benefits of technology!

Does your mind wander while creating, about the countries and cultures of where your creations will go?

Ik heb net een bestelling afgerond van vijf slapende baby zakpoppetjes.  Ze zijn voor een klant hier in Nairobi die dit weekend naar Japan gaat op familie visite.  Het was erg leuk om deze kleine Afrikaanse babies te maken, en dacht tijdens het maken over hun reis en hun nieuwe thuis.  Het is natuurlijk ook leuk om te weten dat mensen over de hele wereld van mijn creaties kunnen genieten. . . Eén van de grote plussen van technologie!

A Trip Upcountry

A different entry for me as I am linking up with Kelly and Carrie for "~ Happy Family Times ~ "

We recently went 'upcountry' on the long weekend.  Most trips in Kenya are 'upcountry' since Nairobi is located in the southern part of Kenya.

One of my biggest peeves about living here is the traffic.  Nairobi traffic is horrendous.  Too many cars on too few roads and add to that seemingly non-existent traffic rules so a decent amount of time on the road is spent in some kind of traffic jam.  However, when going out of town, there are the relatively open roads (no pun on the current number of potholes on the 'highway' after the rainy season) and drivers seem to enjoy this 'freedom' too much.  It often ends up in dangerous driving circumstances at high speed on a substandard surface and with many slow moving vehicles in between.  It leads to situations like this on a two lane highway:

That's right, three lanes of traffic instead of one!

But there are also these nice sightings of zebras and cows grazing together on the side of the highway.

After the 2 and a half hour strenuous drive, my husband managed to bring us safely to our destination in the great Rift Valley, we had a very relaxing few days on the farm in Njoro.  Lots of room for the kids to run around, lots of exploration and just enjoying the green pastures, cute visitors, and slower life.

 

 

 

 

 

 
We had a lovely three days with our friends together and were re-charged for the drive back, wishing that we had a weekend away more often.

Lantern Folding

The end of the school year includes the celebration of the Lantern Festival here at the Nairobi Waldorf School Kindergartens.  At the end of June, the little Kindergartners and their families gather together to walk and sing together on the school grounds in the cold and the darkness of the early evening.

The teachers like to use a different paper lantern each year and I am glad I spotted this one on Etsy, such a simple but delightful lantern.  I have been practising the folding and decided to keep these 'trial' lanterns in the house.  Next week the parents will get together to fold these lanterns from a piece of artwork of their little ones.  The lanterns will be looking lovely!

Op het einde van het schooljaar wordt het Lantaarn Festival gevierd hier op de kleuterscholen van de Nairobi Waldorf School.  Op het eind van juni, komen de kleuters en hun families in de kou en het donker van de vroege avond samen om te wandelen en te zingen in de schooltuin.

De leerkrachten gebruiken graag iedere keer een ander model lantaarn, en ik ben blij dat ik dit model op Etsy zag.  Het is een heel eenvoudige maar mooie lantaarn.  Ik heb het vouen geoefend en heb besloten om deze probeersels in huis te houden.  Volgende week komen de ouders samen om een lantaarn te vouwen van één van de kunstwerken van hun kinderen.  De lantaarns gaan er prachtig uitzien!

Autumn Nature Table

I was inspired by Kelly's post to share our Autumn Nature table. . . living just below the equator, it is considered Autumn, but I guess 'rainy' season is still more appropriate as we don't really have Autumn as most of you know it.  Everything is actually greener at the moment!

Some of the goodness on the table: the two cute bunnies on the left are from the lovely hands of hands of Julie, Mother Earth to the right back of them, is from the lovely hands of Marie, and the Mushroom Fairy Door and gnome are from the lovely hands of Kelly.  The small toadstools, the rain sprite , the wool acorns and autumn leaf fairies are some of my creations, while the rainbow fairy,the green gnome, as well as the beeswax snails on the top of the 'tree house' are made by my kids.

Ik werd door Kelly's blog geinspireerd om onze Herfst seizoens tafel te delen. . . aangezien we net beneden de evenaar wonen telt juni als herfst, maar 'regen seizoen' is eigenlijk een betere benaming omdat we geen echte herfst hebben zoals de meesten van jullie het kennen.  Alles is hier groener op het moment!

Een paar van de mooie dingen op de tafel: de twee schattige konijntjes links werden gemaakt door Julie, Moeder Aarde, rechts achter die twee, werd gemaakt door Marie, en de Vliegenzwam Feeën Deur en kabouter werden gemaakt door Kelly.  De kleine vliegenzwammen, de 'regen', de wollen eikels en de herfstblad feeën werden door mezelf gemaakt, terwijl de regenboog fee, de groene kabouter, en de bijenwas slakken (bovenop het 'boom huis') door mijn kinderen werden gemaakt.
